It's a reference to a Thomas Hobbes quote about life and the human condition. Though, it's not meant to be a reflection of how I really feel about those things. I'm still working that out.
It's also a reference to a favourite children's book "The Little Brute Family" by Russell and Lilian Hoban. A book that reminded me (somewhat uncomfortably) of my own family when I was growing up.
